A pair of Abilene physicians agree that access to quick, complete medical information is essential should your child become sick while traveling.
Being able to quickly and accurately answer questions about your child’s medical history, surgeries, chronic conditions, immunizations and “any pertinent information that may aid in the treatment process” is vital, said Dr. Jeffery Jackson, owner of Dr. J’s Express Care in Abilene.
Abilene pediatrician Justin Smith said a bit of pre-emptive legwork on the part of parents can go a long way.
Travelers should carry a list of current medications, allergies, immunization cards, and notes about significant past medical history for all of their children, Smith said, while Jackson added a child’s medication list should contain not only the name of the medication but also the administration instructions and dosage.
Smith said he usually recommends families contact his office with questions or problems before being seen by an out-of-town physician.
“We can often fix the problem or give advice over the phone,” he said. “If we feel that a visit is necessary, we will give that recommendation at that time.”
